Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy is often a part of standard treatment for head or neck cancer patients. Unfortunately, it can harm normal cells and cause problems, such as infection to the gums, mouth sores and tooth decay. Because of this, it’s important to see a dentist and address any existing dental problems prior to starting treatment.

Before Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy is often a part of standard treatment for head or neck cancer patients. Unfortunately, it can harm normal cells and cause problems, such as infection to the gums, mouth sores and tooth decay. Because of this, it’s important to see a dentist and address any existing dental problems prior to starting treatment.
If you go to the dentist before radiotherapy begins, you can prevent certain mouth problems from developing after or during your treatment. Negative side effects often happen to a cancer patient, because their mouth was not healthy before treatment began. Some of these side effects include:
- Dry mouth
- Cavities
- Sore gums and mouth
- Infections
- Jaw stiffness and bone change
- Loss of taste
